What is Magic—Really?

Have You Wondered What Real Magic Is?

Let me tell you a story.

A few years ago, I was walking through the forest after a long, frustrating day—the kind where problems sprout faster than weeds and your inner critic won’t shut up. I paused under an old oak and sighed, silently thinking, I wish someone could just tell me what to do next.

Right then, a leaf detached itself from a branch overhead and drifted—lazily, almost in slow motion—straight down and landed gently on my chest. A perfect, heart-shaped leaf. I suddenly felt my frustrations melting away.

Coincidence? Synchronicity? Magical answer?

Or all of the above?

You Were Taught to Dismiss Magic

First, it’s not your fault if you second-guess anything magical. Most of us have been trained to ignore synchronicities and the subtle realms—to value logic over intuition, science over story, productivity over presence.

If it can’t be proven in a lab or posted on Instagram, it isn’t considered “real.”

That’s the way our school systems are set up and many people still think that way. But you’re not wired for just logic—that only uses one half of your brain. You’re also wired for wonder on the other side (the right half for most people).

That tug you feel—the whisper that there’s more to reality than what you see—isn’t delusion; it’s soul memory. You’re remembering how to live in dialogue with the world around you—including the unseen Otherworlds.

You’re wired for imagination. And that is a doorway to magic. After all, imagination and magic have the same linguistic roots. Right?

But… What Is Magic, Really?

Magic isn't about waving wands

Let’s demystify this:

  • Magic isn’t waving a wand and levitating your cat (although if your cat cooperates, please record it).
  • Magic is living in conscious relationship with energy, intention, and the unseen forces that shape our lives.
  • According to Dion Fortune, magic is: “The science and art of causing changes in consciousness in conformity with will.”

What does that even mean?

To me, magic is the freedom to choose my reality.

Dion Fortune explained how that works: When you intentionally use your will to change your consciousness, EVERYTHING changes!

That can’t possibly make sense to the logical side of the brain that sees everything as separate and linear, but it will make perfect sense to your right-brain intuitive side.

The intuitive brain knows that there is only ONENESS and that everything is a reflection of that oneness.

In the oneness, everything happens in synchronicities. You set an intention and watch the universe rearrange itself. Like lighting a candle and feeling your heart soften. You speak to the spirit of a tree and receive silence so deep it echoes with truths you had long forgotten.

Magic is remembering that the world is alive—and it wants to speak to you. In fact it IS you, since Oneness is all there is and you are an aspect of that Oneness.

Imagination is a portal...

Imagination Is a Portal, Not a Delusion

As a child you instinctively created worlds with sticks and stones, leaves and flowers, talked to animals, danced with invisible friends. That wasn’t “just play”—it was remembering.

You still remembered how to engage with the invisible. Shamans call this the imaginal realm—the subtle layer just behind the physical that informs myth, prophecy, and healing in every culture on Earth. You can also call it the etheric realm, a dimension slightly more subtle than the astral plane.

When you “imagine” faeries, guides, or magical energy, you’re not escaping reality. You’re expanding your awareness into a wider reality.

How to Know It’s Not Just in Your Head

I hear this all the time from new students: “But how do I know I’m not making it up?”

Here’s the Magic Filter—ask yourself:

  1. Does this experience uplift or guide me in a loving way?
  2. Does it feel alive in my body—tingles, warmth, emotion?
  3. Does it open new possibilities rather than limit me?

If the answer is yes, congratulations—you’re speaking the language of magic.

Three Simple Ways to Re-open the Magical Doorways

Candle magic1. Offer Your Attention

Pick one living thing—a tree, a river, a candle flame—and simply notice it. Let it know you’re listening. Attention is the doorway. (Actually, it doesn’t even have to be what most people consider “living.” A rock or crystal, or even your computer, has a consciousness, or deva, of it’s own and you can communicate with it.)

2. Create a Daily Ritual

Light a candle each morning and whisper an intention into the flame. No Latin incantation required. That tiny act tells the universe: I’m ready.

3. Keep a “Magical Evidence” Journal

Document every synchronicity, intuitive hit, and strange-but-meaningful moment. Patterns will appear, your inner doubter will quiet, and trust will bloom.

A Note to the Skeptical Part of You

If a part of you still rolls its eyes or doubts your experience, that’s okay. I’s just the logical side of your brain trying to stay in control, and you still need that sometimes—you know, for balancing your checking account, paying bills, or getting places on time.

And you don’t need 100 percent certainty for magic to work. You just need willingness—to listen a bit closer, to play a bit more, to let the leaf on your chest be a message instead of a meaningless accident.

You’re not silly for sensing more. You’re waking up.

Keep notes of magical synchronicities
