Weather Shamanism: Healing Our Skies at Winter Solstice

Every December, I find myself doing that very human thing where I look out the window, stare at the clouds, and try to interpret what the weather is really thinking.

And you know what? Sometimes I even hear the answers.

This is the doorway into Weather Shamanism — that ancient-but-timeless practice of treating the weather not as a random backdrop for our days, but as a collection of conscious, responsive beings we can interact with.

Not to manipulate, not to command… but to befriend. And the Winter Solstice, with its long, deep exhale of darkness, is one of the most powerful moments of the year to do it.

If you’ve ever felt a tug in your heart during a storm or sensed an odd companionship in the wind, you’re not imagining things. You’re remembering something.

BTW, if you’re interested, I’ll be leading a Weather Shamanism workshop to connect with the weather spirits on December 20th—learn more here.

What Weather Shamanism Really Is

Weather Shamanism is essentially the art of building a relationship with the spirits of the weather — the wind devas, the cloud beings, the rain elementals, and those mighty storm intelligences that flash lessons across the sky.

It’s not about forcing sunshine to come out for your picnic or begging rain to water your garden (though we’ve all been there, and it can even be effective). It’s about co-creation.

It’s a respectful conversation between you and the living beings around you. A collaboration with the weather spirits who shape the climate, the seasons, and our collective emotional weather too.

Our ancestors did this instinctively. They sang to the winds. They lit fires for the storms. They treated clouds as teachers, not inconveniences. Somewhere along the way, we traded those relationships for five-day forecasts and weather modification geo-engineering.

Weather Shamanism simply brings us back to the conversation.

Why the Winter Solstice Is the Perfect Doorway

Every year, the Solstice arrives like a whispered secret. The longest night. The turning of the wheel. The exact moment when the sun decides, “Okay, fine, I’ll come back now.”

Energetically, it’s a threshold — and thresholds are where magic likes to gather.

In the liminal stillness of Solstice, the time when the sun seems to stand still, the weather spirits feel closer, more available, more willing to share their wisdom.

It’s as if the whole atmosphere pauses, waiting for us to listen. This is why the Solstice is such a powerful time for shamanic journeying, intention setting, and renewing our partnership with the natural world.

When you combine the Solstice energy with the new moon lunar cycle (as we often do in Celtic traditions), you get the perfect cosmic reset button — not just personally, but globally. A chance to dream into the skies we want to co-create.

Meeting the Spirits of the Weather

In shamanic work, we often meet:

  • Sylphs — airy, curious beings who move with wind
  • Cloud Spirits — shapeshifting teachers of impermanence
  • Rain Spirits — gentle healers and emotional cleansers
  • Storm Devas — powerful transformers (and not subtle about it)
  • Weather Faeries — yes, they exist, and yes, they have opinions

During guided shamanic journeys, these beings often appear symbolically, energetically, or visually — though sometimes they simply feel like a presence.

They may offer insight about the land, the climate, or your personal path. They may share how humans can support the healing of Earth’s atmosphere. And sometimes they just bring a message of renewal or hope.

Weather Magic as Activism

One of my favorite aspects of Weather Shamanism is that it moves us beyond despair and into participation.

It can get really depressing to hear about air pollution, aluminum nano-particles sprayed in our skies, increasingly chaotic weather patterns bringing floods, fires, hurricanes and tornadoes.

Instead of feeling helpless about climate change or the wild imbalance of modern weather patterns, we can begin working on the subtle planes — offering healing, energy, intention, respect, and partnership.

This isn’t “controlling” the weather. It’s collaborating with it. Supporting the beings that are already working tirelessly to stabilize the atmosphere.

It’s magical activism at its most heartfelt.

Everyday Ways to Practice Weather Shamanism

You don’t need a workshop to begin.
You can start right now:

  • Greet the sky each morning. Say hello like you would to a friend.
  • Offer gratitude when the rain nourishes the land or the wind clears stagnant energy.
  • Sing or hum outside — sound is an ancient offering.
  • Journey shamanically to meet a weather ally.
  • Ask permission before doing any weather work.
  • Listen more than you speak. The weather loves good listeners.

The point isn’t perfection. It’s relationship.

Weather Shamanism teaches us that healing the world isn’t only about big actions. Sometimes it’s as simple as remembering we’re part of the dance of air, moisture, sunlight, shadow, and storm.

As the Solstice approaches, the invitation is simple:
Slow down. Step outside. Let the sky and the elementals speak.

You might just discover that the weather has been waiting for you to listen.
