Some may think that animal spirit guides are only found in Native American or Eastern shamanic cultures and claim “cultural appropriation,” but there are lots of animal guides and messengers in the folk tales of the British Isles and Europe.
Often they appear as white animals, like the faery deer of Arthurian legends, but they can be any color. Think of Snow White and her animal friends, Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket, and of course Alice with her White Rabbit guide to Wonderland.

My First Animal Guide
I’m Bernadette Wulf and I’ve been called “the journey expert,” having led many guided shamanic journeys over the past couple of decades.
Though I’ve been doing this for a long time, I had to learn from teachers early on, both human and Otherworldly. They guided me on the shamanic path. Since then I’ve been called to guide others — like you.
It has been well over half a century since I met my first animal guide. It was a spirit horse that was always with me through childhood. At the time, I didn’t know about animal spirit guides. I thought of it as an imaginary friend, but it persisted in staying with me until I was about twelve years old.
Not that my horse went away, but another guide came in very strongly — a beautiful wolf spirit who acts as my guardian in both spirit and material realms. It happened when I met two living wolves at the Sacramento Zoo. They walked right up to me and gazed into my eyes for what seemed like a long time. I got their message!
Since then, I have met several other animal spirits who help me in a variety of ways — including a very large golden dragon (that was even seen by a clairvoyant friend of mine). They are all wonderful companions and helpers in my spiritual adventures.

- Animal spirit allies are unseen helpers of the etheric realms. They give guidance from an animal perspective and often offer protection in daily life.
- How can shamanic journeying benefit me?
- Shamanic journeys will deepen your awareness of spiritual dimensions of the Universe and your own being. They are helpful in gaining wisdom and insights from a wider perspective than the ordinary ego-mind.
- Do I need any prior experience to participate?
- Since these shamanic journeys are guided by an experienced practitioner, they are appropriate for anyone, experienced or not.
What can I expect during the workshop?
- You will be led on inner journeys to meet one or more of your animal spirit allies and you will have the opportunity to share your discoveries and interact with a group of like-minded peers.
- What if I don’t meet my animal spirit ally during the workshop?
- Your animal spirit ally will connect with you. They are always ready to assist. Whether you are ready to consciously allow the connection depends on you. They don’t always appear in the way you may expect. If you don’t see or hear them, just pay attention to how they make you feel. The spirit world is a world of feeling, so seeing and hearing are not important.
- Is shamanic journeying safe?
- As long as you work with an experienced guide and trust your own gut, there is nothing to fear. Your animal allies will keep you safe when you ask them.
